Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

As a parent, you will no doubt want to do everything you can to help your child smile with confidence. Once your child can bite together correctly, they will be able to eat more comfortably, care for their teeth and gums more easily and benefit from improved oral health for the rest of their life. We encourage parents to bring their children in for an orthodontic consultation with our friendly, welcoming orthodontist from an early age, helping to put even the youngest members of your family on the path to a bright smile and lifelong self-confidence.

Early consultation

An early consultation with our team of orthodontic specialists will help your child to enjoy better oral health from an early age. This appointment doesn’t necessarily mean your child needs to start treatment right away, or that your child needs treatment at all – it’s a chance to help them feel comfortable at the dentist and assess what treatment they may need to ensure a perfect smile in adulthood. As a parent, an early orthodontic consultation enables you to take a proactive approach to the planning of any treatment, potentially lessening the impact of orthodental treatment (and expense) later in life.

Why should malocclusions be treated?

According to many studies, untreated malocclusions can lead to a variety of problems as your child develops:

  • Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease
  • Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping
  • Crossbites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear
  • Openbites can result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments

Ultimately, early orthodontic treatment does more than make a pretty smile, it creates a healthier attitude to oral health and a healthy sense of wellbeing from a young age.

Removable appliances:

Removable appliances are commonly used to treat children. These are used to undertake simple tooth movements in younger patients who may still have baby teeth present.

The appliance has delicate wires and springs that move teeth using gentle pressure. They can be removed when playing sports, practicing musical instruments and for cleaning teeth, so they don’t interfere with your child’s normal routine.

Functional appliances are also common among our younger patients. Also known as growth modification applicants, these are usually removable and can be used to guide the growth and development of jaws in children. They are particularly beneficial if your child has a discrepancy in the size of their upper and lower jaws. Functional appliances can come as a pair, comprising of an upper and a lower brace.
