Flexible Through Being Removable

Retainers are the most effective method of ensuring teeth stay in the desired position after braces have been removed. Studies show that without retention, even perfectly aligned teeth can gradually revert back to their prior positions. Straight teeth are not only aesthetically pleasing but also help to improve your overall gum health and function.

We offer several different types of retainer:

Vivera Retainers

Vivera retainers are made by Invisalign to safeguard your new smile for years to come. Vivera retainers are made with the same state of the art technology as Invisalign aligners. This involves using 3D digital imaging, proprietary thermoplastic material and advanced fabrication technology.

This high-tech approach creates a strong retainer with an extremely precise fit and a smooth finish that grips firmly and feels comfortable.

Alternatives to Vivera retainers

Teeth retention can also be provided by fixed retainers, which are bonded to the back of the six front teeth. A fixed retainer is very discreet as it consists of a metallic wire bonded to the back of the front six teeth (available for upper or lower arches).

However, fixed retainers still require you to wear a removable device such as Vivera or Essix retainers every night to prevent your back teeth from moving.

What are the benefits/risks of fixed retainers?

A fixed retainer is always in place so patients do not need to worry about forgetting to wear it. In addition, a fixed retainer assists in stabilising mobile teeth, as well as reducing the risk of a relapse in heavily rotated teeth.

On the negative side, fixed retainers only fix the front six teeth and cannot stop the premolars and molars from moving. They can create oral hygiene problems as flossing the front teeth will be more difficult. Fixed retainers can also change the bite as the wire and fillings can touch the tips of the lower teeth. Your orthodontist will consider the pros and cons of fixed retainers and advise you of their suitability according to your individual circumstances and treatment.

Essix Retainers

The Essix retainer is created using a clear thermoplastic mould and is almost invisible to onlookers. This removable appliance provides support to the teeth to help prevent them moving out of their desired position.

The Essix retainer is less obtrusive and more aesthetically pleasing than traditional retention appliances thanks to its natural look and lack of wires. Unlike a fixed retainer, an Essix retains every tooth in the mouth, not just the front six teeth.

The retention regime is usually:

  • Full time wear (20-22 hours a day) for the first four months after brace treatment
  • Night time wear (12 hours a night) for the following 8 months
  • Night time wear (8 hours a night) thereafter

It is important that you attend your regular check-ups as your retainers may need replacing from time to time.
